1,000 Jazz Albums You Should Hear Before You Die – The Complete List

This list, which took the better part of four years, was inspired by those who said that jazz was limited to a certain style or type of performer. The idea behind this list was not to create a “best” albums list, but rather a extensive list of albums that covered as much of jazz history as possible.

Even after posting 1,000 albums, this list is really only a sample of the history of this great art form.

Hopefully you will find some great music you have never heard before and add to your collection.

Enjoy!

  1. An impressive work, and in my mind well worth your time [to me]. It makes me wish I were younger [66], so I could have the time to go “back”:, but will give it a supreme effort. Thanks for the heads up on KPLU, as well as jazz24.org. All in all, this makes for a “good day” on the web.
Perhaps we will meet, next life?

Again, thank you, “my friend”. All the best to you and yours.

    Sincerely,

  2. Needs even more Miles ?

Is there any New Orleans music here? Anything from outside north east America? Serge Gainsbourg, Jorge Ben?

Sorry but…. Diana Krall invalidates the effort here.

Next time try a 100 album list, without repeating artists, and cut it off at 1976.

  3. Quite interesting. It shows there is a lot to be learn about jazz. Some absences are remarquable: Hugh Masekela from South Africa for example. A good job anyway!

  4. What a great list ! Lots of new ones for me to find. To the critics : Of course you could compile a better list, but you didn’t and won’t. Congratulations to Jazz 24.

However Yahoo marketing and other pay per click search engines offer some excellent traffic at

  6. I think that what you composed made a lot of sense. However, what about this?
what if you wrote a catchier post title? I am not saying your information isn’t solid, however suppose you added
something that makes people desire more? I mean 1,000 Jazz Albums

  13. I love Jazz, and have since my Army days back in 1977. This may be the best Jazz Album list I’ve come across. There’s the run of the mill and new and interesting stuff combined here in one list, that makes looking into Jazz albums that might bolster a collection easy. There are many artist and albums here on this list that I’ve been meaning to give a listen to on this one list (instead of 10 – 20 on this list, 5 – 6 on that list, etc), and with it containing 1,000 albums (and judging from the albums I am familiar with on this list, it is a very good listing) I can mine jewels from it for quite some time to come. This list is truly like a gift that keeps on giving, and I believe it is a good reference for new and seasoned Jazz album collectors alike. Thanks!
